So what actually happens to all that junk that you throw into that dumpster? Once we pick up your dumpster we take it to the local landfill, big deal, you already knew that right? So let’s take a closer look at landfills themselves.
They’re approximately over 1200 landfills in the United States today. Currently Ohio has over 70 landfills in operation. The largest landfill in Ohio is located in Hamilton County and is named Mount Rumpke. This landfill gets 2 million tons of waste per year. This is not the first landfill in the US though. The first landfill built in the US was built in California in 1937.
According to howstuffworks.com Americans generate trash at a rate of 4.9 lbs. of trash per person per day. In 2018 it was estimated that there was 292.4 million tons of trash generated in the US per year. Hopefully all this waste eventually ends up in a landfill where it is buried in a large hole and systematically covered up with dirt to help it decompose.
