Dumpsters

Have you ever wondered who made the first dumpster? Or have you have thought “What are the different types of dumpsters, and what exactly are they constructed from”? Well, if you are like us these questions need answered!

The first dumpsters was patented in 1936 by the Dempster brothers. These gentlemen originated from Knoxville Tennessee. The Dempster brothers not only patented the first dumpster they also patented the first garbage truck. They named this truck the Dempster Dumpmaster. Now that we got your attention let’s learn more about dumpsters.

There are three main materials used in the construction of dumpsters. Dumpsters are made mainly from three materials. Steel, Poly (plastic), and a steel modular frame with a bag liner. The steel dumpsters are completely made from steel. This type of container is extremely rigid and durable. These units can weigh on average 430 lbs. and up to 500 lbs. A drawback of the all steel dumpster is rust. These dumpsters require constant upkeep to keep them looking their best.

The polymer dumpsters originated in the 1980s They are much lighter than the all steel dumpster and are not as rigid or durable. As well as being lighter they do not rust. This enables a lot less maintenance and upkeep on these containers.

The modular steel frame dumpster is a steel framed dumpster that has a bag liner to hold the waste. These containers weigh around the same as the polymer dumpster and do not offer the durability of the all steel containers. These are a good choice for liquid waste but are susceptible to punctures and tears, making them not ideal for most construction material.
